How I became a Notary

How I Became a Notary Public for California

According to a poll by the National Notary Association (NNA), over 50% of people became notaries simply because their employers asked them to.  So it shouldn’t come to you as a surprise that this was exactly how I became a Notary Public too.  I could sit here and lie and say that ever since I was a little girl it was my dream to serve as a public official to notarize signatures, but that would not be true.  Realistically, in this economy, if my employer had asked me to do anything, my response would always be “Consider it done!” (within legal boundaries, of course).

In the fall of 2013, my employer asked me if I was interested in becoming a Notary to serve as a backup for the existing Notary in our firm, so that there would be coverage while she was sick or on vacation.

It wasn’t a difficult decision to make. I agreed to take the exam as soon as possible.  On exam day, I was nervous, I was taking the 6 hour mandatory training and the exam on the same day.  I had no time to study and no time to let it sink in.  (Later I found out that I could have read the Notary Handbook available on the Secretary of State’s website prior to taking the exam).

Well, needless to say, I passed the test with flying colors and I have been performing notarial acts ever since.  Obtaining my notary commission has been an awesome experience so far and I look forward to blogging and sharing the adventures along the way!
